John Goodlad, in his article "Access to Knowledge", speaks of not enough being done to remove the "rote memorization boredom" from classrooms. He also goes on to say that not enough is being done to integrate meaningful activities like practical demonstrations and experiments with text based learning.
I have to admit I agree with this position. In my experience as an engineering student, I have found it much easier; not to mention much more fun, to learn the particular topic at hand when taking part in labs and group projects. In fact, I've been amazed at how many times something just "clicked" whilst playing around with my own electronics equipment at home.
